Nursing encompasses autonomous and collaborative care of individuals of all ages, families, groups and communities, sick or well and in all settings. Nursing includes the promotion of Health, prevention of illness, and the care of the ill, disabled and dying people. Advocacy, promotion of a safe environment, research, participation in shaping Health policy and in-patient and health systems management, and education are also key nursing roles (ICN 2010).
A midwife is a person who has successfully completed a programme of instructions in midwifery, duly registered and licensed by the NMCN practiceas a professional midwife providing health care in all areas of clinical practice such as the home, community, clinics and other health care institutions.
The curriculum for this programme is specifically designed for the training of midwives, who are critical to the delivery of safe maternal and child health services at the community level. The midwife is capable of functioning in all areas of the health care delivery system.
